Sweet Syria

The Italian National Circus tent arrive in Damascus. However, there’s no trace of the magical realism told by Fellini. Even in that idealized place, made by dreams and celluloid, you can’t wait to run away. While the pictures of the riot pour into the TV, while the rockets whistle in the sky, the innocent look of two kids stretches time endlessly. Far from the aseptic war story or the TV report, al-Beik’s documentary is a frantic research of a fictional normality, a heartfelt and insisted tale of a daily life even more unreal that fiction itself.
